The geography of Medina

Medina sits in a basin on the Hejaz plateau, hemmed in by black basalt lava fields and mountains — a setting that explains why an oasis grew here and why the city was so defensible.

Where the city sits

Medina lies in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia, roughly 340 km north of Mecca and about 150 km inland from the Red Sea port of Yanbu. The city occupies a broad basin on the Hejaz plateau at an elevation of around 600 metres, which takes a small but welcome edge off the desert heat — winter nights can be genuinely cool (the weather page has the month-by-month picture). To the north the basin is closed by Mount Uhud, the city's highest and most storied mountain; to the south rises the smaller Mount Ayr. A well-known hadith describes the sanctuary of Medina as lying between these two mountains.

The lava fields (harrat)

Medina's most distinctive geographical feature is the black volcanic rock that surrounds it. The city is wedged between great basalt lava fields — Harrat Rahat, one of Arabia's largest, stretching hundreds of kilometres southward towards Mecca, and Harrat Wabarah to the west. These fields of jagged, weathered basalt are near-impassable to animals and vehicles alike, and in the seventh century they were decisive military terrain: the flows protected the settlement's eastern and western flanks, so a defensive ditch across the open northern approach was enough to seal the city in the Battle of the Trench.

The volcanism is dormant, not ancient history. In 1256 CE (654 AH) an eruption on Harrat Rahat sent a lava flow towards Medina that halted only a few kilometres east of the city — an event vividly recorded by medieval chroniclers, who describe its glow lighting the night sky. Cinder cones and fresh-looking flows from that eruption are still visible southeast of the built-up area.

Wadis and the water that made the oasis

Three main wadis — seasonal watercourses — converge on the Medina basin: Wadi al-Aqiq from the southwest, the most celebrated, lined historically with palaces and gardens and mentioned affectionately in early Islamic sources; Wadi Buthan through the centre; and Wadi Qanat skirting the north near Uhud. Rain is rare, but when storms break over the surrounding highlands the wadis carry run-off into the basin, where the underlying basalt traps it in shallow aquifers. That accident of geology is the whole story of the city: reliable groundwater, reachable by hand-dug wells, made dense palm groves and permanent settlement possible in an otherwise hyper-arid landscape. Climate and landscape today

The climate is hot desert: summer highs regularly exceed 40 °C, annual rainfall is low and erratic, and what falls often arrives in short, intense storms that briefly flood the wadis. Modern Medina has spread far beyond the old oasis core, climbing onto the lava margins and along the wadi corridors, with ring roads looping the basin and the Haramain railway and airport anchoring the west and northeast of the city respectively.
