Landmarks of Medina

The sites below are the core of a Medina ziyarat, ordered roughly by how most visitors prioritise them. Each links to a detailed page, and all are plotted on the interactive map.

Quba Mosque

The first mosque in Islam, about 6 km south of the centre. A hadith promises the reward of an Umrah for those who purify themselves at home and pray here.

Visit Quba

Mount Uhud

Battlefield of 625 CE north of the city, with the Martyrs' Cemetery, Archers' Hill and the grave of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib.

Visit Uhud

Jannat al-Baqi

The main cemetery of Medina since the Prophet's lifetime, immediately east of the mosque. Open to visitors at set morning and afternoon hours.

Planning tip: Quba, Qiblatayn and the Seven Mosques sit on the south and west of the city and combine well in one half-day; Uhud is a separate short trip north. The itineraries page lays out one-, two- and three-day plans.
